The ABB 500CPU05 (part number 1MRB150081R1E) is a small programmable logic controller (PLC) CPU unit in the AC500 family. It has a fast 32‑bit microprocessor and built‑in flash memory for user programs and data. It can hold up to 512 KB of program code and 256 KB of data storage. It runs IEC 61131‑3 languages like Ladder, Function Block, Structured Text and Instruction List. It boots up in under 1 second so it brings control back fast after power loss. It has two internal serial ports that you can set up as RS‑232 or RS‑485. It also has an Ethernet port for Modbus TCP and PROFINET links. You can add external communication modules so it can talk on CANopen, DeviceNet or PROFIBUS DP. It can work as a slave on those networks if you fit the right module. It can also log data on an SD card slot that sits on its side. It has eight buttons and a small display so you can see error codes and step through menus to check its running state.

The unit runs on 24 V DC power and draws about 4 W on its own. It can drive up to 128 I/O points when you plug in I/O modules on its left. You fit I/O extension modules in any order and up to ten of them so you can handle digital signals, analog inputs and outputs, temperature sensors or motion modules. It can handle up to 320 local I/O points if you use the slim S500‑eCo modules. It links I/O over a backplane bus at 12 MHz so it scans all modules quickly and keeps cycle time low. It can do a basic instruction in 0.6 μs and a floating‑point math step in 0.7 μs. It has built‑in watchdog timers to restart the CPU if a program locks up. It has protection against under‑voltage, over‑voltage and reverse polarity on its supply. It works in temperatures from –25 °C to +60 °C and in humidity up to 95 % without condensation. It can survive shocks up to 15 g and vibration up to 2 g at 10–150 Hz. It meets CE, UL and RoHS rules so you can use it in plants in many parts of the world.

The shape of the 500CPU05 is a block that is 30 mm wide, 102 mm high and 130 mm deep. It clips on to a standard DIN‑rail or bolts to a flat panel with two M4 screws. It locks into place so it does not fall out when you pull on the cables. The front has a row of LEDs that show power, run, error and communication status as green or red lights. There are two RJ45 sockets for Ethernet and two screw terminals for the serial link. The SD card slot sits under a cap on the right side. The backplane connector on the left links to any S500 I/O module. You pull on a latch and slide it out for a quick swap if you need to replace it.
